THE HOUSTON Texans handed a career lifeline to running back Cam Akers.

Akers, a former Super Bowl winner with the Los Angeles Rams, saw his 2023 season with the Minnesota Vikings ruined by an Achilles injury.

But now he’s back in action and joins a running back lineup in Houston led by 2021 Pro Bowler Joe Mixon.

Dameon Pierce is also on the roster, and with Akers now on board, the Texans have a lot of depth at that position.

Akers has enjoyed a rollercoaster career thus far, with the NFL’s greatest moments combined with some genuine lows, many of them injury-related.

He was selected by the Los Angeles Rams in the second round, 52nd overall, in the 2020 NFL Draft.

His debut season was dominated by the Covid-19 pandemic, with many of the games played behind closed doors.

Akers had 145 carries for 625 yards and scored three touchdowns in 13 games.

An Achilles injury restricted him to just one appearance in the 2021 regular season.

But he bounced back and produced a series of stellar performances at the start of 2022 as the Rams achieved Super Bowl glory in their own stadium.

He had 67 carries for 172 yards in the postseason as the Rams reached their biggest game of all.

Akers started the Super Bowl against the Cincinnati Bengals, which ended in a 23-20 victory for the Rams.

His breakout season came in 2022, when he had 188 carries for 786 yards, with 11 touchdowns.

But then came another season, unfortunately destroyed by injury for Akers in 2023.

It started with the Rams and then was moved after a few weeks to Minneapolis when the Vikings signed him last September.

Now comes a new chance for Akers, and with the Texans building a formidable team, she may be one to remember.

The Texans open their 2024 campaign against the Indianapolis Colts on September 5th.

Texans coach DeMeco Ryans urged the team’s fans to make a difference as the new campaign begins.

“With the fans arriving early and making noise when we are at the stadium, it is a really unique and really cool atmosphere, especially playing here at NRG Stadium,” Ryans said.

“When it’s crowded and noisy, all I think about is our playoff game against the Cleveland Browns here.

“It was a very special moment to see how full the stadium was and what that meant for our players.

“It gives them more energy, more energy to go out and do their work.”
