San Francisco was missing two players from its first practice of training camp on Wednesday.

Aiyuk was only seen at the facility and did not practice, which is called hold-in.

However, Williams did not attend camp and is holding out because of issues with his contract, 49ers coach Kyle Shanahan told reporters.

“It was something that I knew could be a possibility and I was hoping he would be here,” Shanahan said Wednesday, per ESPN.

“But I knew it could be a possibility and I was pretty confident that everything would work out in the long run and that he would be here and we would be on the same page with everything.

“But it’s just one day of practice, and I think Trent will be fine missing a few practices.”

On Thursday, the 49ers signed wide receiver Malik Turner and placed Williams on the reserve/non-reporting list on Thursday.

The 36-year-old will now be subject to a $50,000 fine for every day he fails to attend training camp.

Williams is under contract through the 2026 season.

He signed a six-year, $136 million contract extension with San Francisco in 2021.

Williams will be the highest paid money for an offensive lineman in 2024, earning close to $31.6 million, per Over The Cap.

The veteran could be looking for guarantees in his deal, as the 49ers can opt out of his contract in each of the remaining years of his current deal.

Williams is considered one of the best offensive linemen in the NFL.

He was an All-Pro the last three seasons.

Williams’ contract situation comes amid a contract dispute between San Francisco and 2023 second-team All-Pro player Aiyuk.

The 26-year-old is entering the final year of his rookie contract and has been seeking a contract extension during the offseason.

After requesting a trade last week, Aiyuk reported to training camp on Tuesday.

He watched the training from the sidelines, wearing shorts and a t-shirt.

Aiyuk was not subject to “withholding” fines.

The 49ers have several players, including defensive backs Charavarius Ward, Dre Greenlaw and Talanoa Hufanga, who will be free agents after the 2024 season.

San Francisco is coming off a Super Bowl overtime loss to the Kansas City Chiefs last season.
