FORMER NFL coach Wade Phillips criticized a reporter for his on-field question during a recent UFL game.

Currently head coach of the San Antonio Brahmas in the new Spring league, Phillips, 76, recently went viral for his icy exchange with Cole Cubelic.

It happened with 2:05 left in the fourth quarter after a touchdown pass from Chase Garber to Alize Mack.

Following a two-point conversion by Mack, Phillips elected to kick off for St. Louis rather than attempt the UFL’s 4th and 12th alternatives.

This unique rule allows teams that have just scored and are tied or trailing in the fourth quarter to attempt the conversion from their own 28-yard line.

Former Auburn center turned broadcaster Cole Cubelic was the ESPN sideline reporter for the game, which was being broadcast on ABC.

He approached Phillips on the sideline to question him about why he chose to kick off.

But the former Dallas Cowboys and Buffalo Bills coach, who also won Super Bowl 50 with the Denver Broncos, wasn’t in the mood to explain himself.

“What?” he asked, sounding impressed, before finally adding that they had breaks available as he walked away.

On Friday, Phillips took to X, formerly known as Twitter, to explain his response.

“We stopped them and still had two timeouts when we got the ball back. Stupid question,” He wrote.

Shortly afterwards, Philips tweeted“I didn’t like being questioned at a critical moment in the game when [the] The TV guy was obviously wrong.”

Fans were quick to respond to Phillips’ criticism, with one commenting, “Facts!”

“You’re on the right trainer!” said a second.

“Tell them, Wade!!” replied another.

While a fourth added: “The TV guy’s mission was accomplished. Made for a good TV time.”

Ultimately, the Battlehawks left the Alamodome with the victory, 31-24.

Phillips’ first loss of the season leaves the Brahmas in second place in the XFL Conference at 2-1.

The Battlehawks lead, with the DC Defenders in third, with all three now 2-1.

The defending XFL champions, the Arlington Renegades, lose 0-3.

As for the UFL Conference, the red-hot Birmingham Stallions, who have won two straight USFL titles, remain undefeated at 3-0.

They are followed by the 2-1 Michigan Pathers, with the 1-2 Memphis Showboats in third, and the 0-3 Houston Roughnecks in fourth.

Phillips’ Brahmas will host the Panthers on Saturday at 7pm ET.
