Gathings suffered a hamstring injury and if the tight end goes unclaimed, he will become a free agent instead of hitting the Chiefs’ injured reserve list.

It is reported that Gathings picked up a hamstring injury earlier this week.

In a corresponding move, Kansas City signed tight end Geor’quarius Spivey.

Gathings has yet to play in a regular season game in his career.

Excitement is starting to build in Kansas City as the Chiefs ramp up their preparations for the new season.

Andy Reid’s side begin their season-opening campaign next month.

The Chiefs will face the Baltimore Ravens on September 5th.

They will also play the Cincinnati Bengals, Atlanta Falcons and Los Angeles Chargers in the opening weeks of the season.

With their iconic quarterback Patrick Mahomes, the Chiefs will aim to be the first team in NFL history to win their third consecutive Super Bowl and fourth in six seasons.

Mahomes guided the Chiefs to Super Bowl glory in 2020, when they came from behind to beat the San Francisco 49ers in Miami.

‘No puppets, just rings,’ Kansas City fans claim after Chiefs coach Andy Reid responds to Raiders’ Patrick Mahomes insult

They were again in the biggest game in 2023, fighting to defeat the Philadelphia Eagles.

And in February, the Chiefs sealed a magical hat trick in Las Vegas.

Once again the 49ers led, but the Chiefs recovered and won 25-22 in overtime.

Mahomes threw the game-winning pass to Mecole Hardman.

New Chiefs backup quarterback Carson Wentz has been talking to reporters about the similarities between Kansas City’s system and the one he experienced with the Eagles.

“I mean, it has a lot of similarities to my time in Philadelphia (Eagles), but it’s evolved a lot,” Wentz said.

“The speed of this offense is unparalleled and is faster than any team I have been a part of.

“I think the way we utilize crossers and things like that and really do a lot of things that Pat [Mahomes] stands out and how they come to life here.

“It’s fun to be part of this, to be in the X and O meetings and see the why behind things.

“I’m trying to learn as much as I can and be a part of it, but it’s really cool how they do things.”
