But the party atmosphere turned sour when their porter, Nick Pugh, took a missile to the head.

Fans are encouraged to make lots of noise on the 12th hole at The Grange Golf Club.

Players can even choose their own song to play on their tee shot – with 5,000 fans surrounding the green at the end of the 165-yard hole.

Beer cups and water bottles are regularly thrown into the stands.

And it went too far after Australian Herbert sank a birdie putt.

His effort saw him raise a clenched fist in celebration to the crowd and a wave of beers and bottles being thrown onto the pitch.

Herbert was soaking up the fans’ joy.

The commentator declared: “It’s raining amber nectar.”

But the applause quickly turned to gasps of horror when a bottle flew through the air and hit Pugh in the back of the head.

The caddy, holding the flag on the green, immediately knelt down as his Rippers star Herbert checked on him.

Play on the 17th tee of the Zurich Open in New Orleans was halted as ALLIGATOR walked across the grass

And this generated a flood of comments from fans on social media.

One said: “Is this what they do at @livgolf_league events? Throwing water bottles at people after they hit six-foot putts?

Another wrote: “Idiots.”

A third fumed: “This is horrible, LIV needs to protect their players and caddies. They should put nets around the greens.”

A fourth responded: “Encouraging people to consume too much alcohol results in some very unpleasant incidents like these.”

A fifth responded: “Allowing patrons who have probably consumed various amounts of alcohol to throw bottles onto the lawn is ok, but if the bottles hit someone on said lawn, isn’t that ok? What did LIV Golf expect to happen?”

A sixth groaned: “Ask Lucas Herbert’s caddy after being hit behind the ear with a beer can? That’s not growing golf, it’s growing bogans.”

And one end user commented: “LIV is begging for “scenes” and frenzied crowds, this was practically inevitable.”

Who are the most famous Wags in golf?

The world’s best golfers enjoy an incredible lifestyle – and their Wags lead their own exciting lives.

Here are some of the best known beauties…

  • A master golfer rushed home after his latest triumph to be by his wife’s side as she gave birth to their first child.
  • Playing with a handicap of three, this sports reporter could give her friend a run for her money on the greens.
  • This low-key beauty married a superstar golfer in front of Stevie Wonder, Chris Martin and Niall Horan.
  • A former gymnast who has been her husband’s rock for 14 years – he even pays tribute to her on his golf balls.

The controversial LIV Golf deliberately created the Watering Hole as “a party hole” with “the kind of excitement that accompanies a grand event.”

They tried to put an “extra focus on keeping everyone safe and happy” by replacing beer cans with glasses – although it clearly didn’t work.

Fortunately, however, Pugh escaped relatively unscathed.

Herbert said: “At first I was worried about him but he is fine now.

“He is fine and took it very well. He could have been a lot more upset about it, but he took it very well.

“It’s probably hard to ask someone who’s had 15 beers to point a water bottle away from someone. Maybe it’s too much to ask.

“[Playing partner] ‘Gracey’ [Branden Grace] took a shot from the upper level and some drinks fell onto the green.

“This is a lot of fun and it’s in the right places for us to deal with. Some went too far.

“But the crowd policed themselves and got a few boos when they threw things too close.
