SUPERSTAR golfer Rory McIlroy is seen without his wedding ring as he hits the green for the first time since news of his divorce broke.
Rory, 35, looked sad as he trained for today’s US PGA Championship in Valhalla, Kentucky.
Number two in the world filed for divorce from 36-year-old Erica Stollhis wife of seven years and mother of his three-year-old daughter Poppy on Monday.
But the news came as a “complete bombshell” to his friends – especially as McIlroy, worth around £200m, bought land in Wentworth, Surrey.
He is believed to already have a home in the London area and another in Holywood, Northern Ireland, close to where he grew up.
Last night a source said: “Rory could have easily seen the family future in Wentworth and in London – at least until recently.
“He spent between £10 million and £14 million on plans for the house in Wentworth, which he was building to their specifications.
“Friends of his, like golfers Justin Rose and Ernie Els, live there and it’s the home of European golf.
“That’s partly why News of her divorce was a complete bombshell for anyone who knows Rory.
“Who saw him with Erica at Players Championship In March I would have thought everything was great – but that clearly wasn’t the case. That’s why people were so surprised by it.”
McIlroy filed documents with Palm Beach County Court, Florida. The three-page divorce petition did not reveal the reason for the separation, but said the marriage was “irretrievably broken.”
Documents filed in the US showed that the four-time major champion and Erica signed a prenuptial agreement in March 2017, before getting married in April of that year.
They also revealed that the couple agreed to “share parental responsibility” for Poppy. She was born in Florida – so she will probably be raised in the USA.
McIlroy refused to answer any questions about his divorce last night.
Inside Rory McIlroy’s turbulent love life
By Ciaran Wiseman
RORY McIlroy had a high-profile romance with former tennis world number one Caroline Wozniacki before their split in 2014.
The following year, the golf ace began dating Erica Stoll, whom he met on the PGA Tour in 2011.
Erica frequently interacted with players through her role as volunteer operations manager for the PGA Championship.
She even saved McIlroy from losing his playing time at the 2012 Ryder Cup after some confusion over the time zone.
The incident began a strong friendship between the two, four years before their relationship turned romantic.
McIlroy and Erica were spotted on a series of dates in Rochester, New York in the early days of their relationship.
Just eight months later, the couple got engaged in Paris and walked down the aisle at Ashford Castle in Ireland in 2017.
The pair then welcomed daughter Poppy into the world three years later.
Throughout their time together, McIlroy and Erica kept their relationship to themselves, with the golfer keen to shield his family from cameras while filming Netflix documentary series Full Swing.
However, after seven years of marriage, McIlroy filed for divorce from Erica.
The reasons for the divorce were not disclosed, but the Northern Irishman filed documents with a Florida court.
