SCOTTIE Scheffler was seen looking despondent in the first photos of him in prison following his shock arrest.

The world’s number one golfer was trying to hit his tee shot at Valhalla for the second round of the PGA Championship when he was detained after a misunderstanding.

Photos have since emerged, apparently taken by a fellow inmate who sneakily took selfies while Scheffler, 27, spoke to officers on Friday.

The prisoner told TMZ that the sportsman “kept saying it was nonsense that he was there”.

They also alleged that prison officials and correctional officers were catching glimpses of Scheffler behind bars.

The golfer was eventually cleared and made his tee time at 10:08 a.m., birdieing the first hole and shooting a five-under 66 overall.

A fatal crash involving a pedestrian in front of the club in Louisville, Kentucky shortly after 5am saw Scheffler get stuck in traffic and accidentally drag a police officer with his vehicle.

He later detailed the incident on Instagram.

This morningI was proceeding as instructed by the police officers,” he wrote.

“It was a very chaotic situation, which is understandable considering the tragic accident that occurred earlier, and there was a huge misunderstanding about what I thought I was being asked to do.

“I never intended to disregard any of the instructions. I’m hoping to put that aside and focus on golf today.”

Scheffler was charged with second-degree assault on a police officer, criminal mischief, reckless driving and failure to signal a police officer directing traffic.

Prosecutors are expected to drop the charges, according to reports.

He told reporters that the “huge misunderstanding” left him “shaken” as he was forced to endure interrogations by police when he should have been preparing his coup.

He said: “It was a chaotic situation and a huge misunderstanding. My head is still spinning.

“I was very shaken, to say the least… I was never angry, I was just in shock. I was shaking for about an hour.”

To calm nerves, Scheffler also told reporters that he had a relationship with the officer who took him to arrest.

He said: “We had a Cool Talking in the car kind of helped me calm down. I was sitting there waiting to go in and I asked him, ‘Can you come hang out with me for a few minutes so I can calm down?’.

“When I was sitting in the cell, there was a TV there and I could see myself on the TV.”

Witnesses said Scheffler tried to dodge what he thought were a group of security guards, but were actually police officers.

A police officer allegedly threw himself at the golf star’s car, shouting at him to stop driving.

A police report said the Masters champion “refused to comply and accelerated” during the chaos, “dragging Detective Gillis” to the ground.

The frightening death is believed to have raised security fears at the event, reports say.

Dramatic footage showed Scheffler being handcuffed and placed in a police car flanked by two officers.

Image of golf’s most stylish star in handcuffs will shock fans around the world

THE images of Scottie Scheffler being taken to prison in handcuffs will shock the golf world because no one has a clearer picture than the world No. 1, writes David Facey.

Scheffler’s arrest for allegedly speeding past a police car on his way to the second round of the USPGA Championship goes against everything the God-fearing family man stands for.

The fact that this happened just a week after his wife, Meredith, gave birth to their first child, Bennett, makes it all the more shocking.

Scheffler and Ryder Cup teammate Sam Burns organize a Bible group attended by other PGA Tour players and caddies, and there has never been a whiff of scandal associated with the 27-year-old.

Before returning to action at the USPGA — after taking a three-week break to enjoy being a father for the first time — Scheffler spoke about how happy his life was now.

He said: “At home it was a good time to reflect a little on my career so far and where my life has gone.

“I married my high school sweetheart and always wanted to play professional golf, and of course I did, won two Masters and became No. 1 in the world.

“When I was at home, I was sitting there with a newborn in my arms and the green jacket in the closet. It was a very special moment, I think.”

A moment of madness, or confusion, could turn your world upside down.
