The 27-year-old called the pre-match incident in Louisville, Kentucky, a “huge misunderstanding” after “a very chaotic situation”.

Scheffler’s photo, which shows him wearing an orange jumpsuit, sent social media into a frenzy after he was detained at Valhalla Golf Club.

He returned to the course less than an hour before his fog-delayed tee time and finished his round in eighth at 13 under par.

He said on Sunday: “I was arrested on Friday morning and I turned up here and played a good round of golf too.”

The Texan was scheduled to appear in Louisville court at 9 a.m. Tuesday, but the appearance was rescheduled for Monday, June 3.

Steve Romines, the golfer’s attorney, filed a motion to delay the proceedings, having previously said his client would not appear at the pretrial hearing.

Scheffler is expected to be at the June 3 hearing, according to WLKY. with.

The golfer is believed to have been trying to avoid a fatal traffic jam on Friday morning on his way to the second round of the PGA Championship when he allegedly ran over a police officer.

His lawyer, Romine, said: “They were directing traffic, he displayed his media credential and entered as they were instructed.

“And yes, I think the police officer who was directing traffic may not have been part of the traffic team at the event.

“And that’s where the lack of communication came in and that’s why we’re here.”

Video of Scheffler’s arrest went viral before he was charged with second-degree assault on a police officer and third-degree criminal mischief.

He is also accused of driving recklessly and disregarding the traffic signals of a police officer directing traffic.

Following the incident, the golfer wrote on Instagram: “There was a huge misunderstanding about what I thought I was being asked to do.

“I never intended to disregard any of the instructions.”
