The dramatic arrest of world number 1 golfer Scottie Scheffler will be reviewed after an officer failed to turn on his body camera.

The 27-year-old defending Masters champion was detained after allegedly running over a police officer and dragging him to the ground at the US PGA Championship on May 17.

Scheffler was arrested after allegedly hitting a police officer after driving through an area where officers were dealing with a fatal crash.

He was charged with second-degree assault on a police officer, third-degree criminal mischief, reckless driving and failure to comply with traffic signals.

He denies all accusations and classified the incident as a “big misunderstanding”.

However, Louisville police have now committed to investigating and “appropriately addressing” any policy violations that may have arisen from the arrest.

It also emerged that Officer Bryan Gillis failed to activate body camera video before Scheffler was handcuffed and arrested – despite it being standard operating procedure.

In a statement, Louisville Police Chief Jacquelyn Gwinn-Villaroel said: “The internal investigation is still ongoing.

“Any policy violations revealed during the investigation will be handled appropriately in accordance with LMPD disciplinary protocol.

“The department intends to provide an additional update on the investigation on Thursday, May 23, 2024.”

At his weekly press conference, Louisville Mayor Craig Greenberg emphasized that “actions will be taken” if policies are not followed.

He also drew attention to missing body camera footage of the initial contact between Officer Gillis and Scheffler.

“I still have questions about why it wasn’t on during Mr. Scheffler’s arrest,” he said.

Scheffler was scheduled to appear in court on Tuesday, but had his arraignment date postponed until June 3.

His lawyer has said he is prepared to go to trial if the charges are not dropped.

Following the incident, the golfer wrote on Instagram: “There was a huge misunderstanding about what I thought I was being asked to do.

“I never intended to disregard any of the instructions.”

He returned to the course less than an hour before his fog-delayed tee time and finished his round in eighth at 13 under par.

Scheffler’s arrest came just weeks after he was crowned Masters champion with his four-stroke victory at Augusta National.

It was the golfer’s second time winning the Masters in just three years, living up to his pre-tournament favorite status by claiming the Green Jacket.

Image of golf’s most stylish star in handcuffs will shock fans around the world

THE images of Scottie Scheffler being taken to prison in handcuffs will shock the golf world because no one has a clearer picture than the world No. 1, writes David Facey.

Scheffler’s arrest for allegedly passing a police car on his way to the second round of the USPGA Championship goes against everything the God-fearing family man stands for.

The fact that this happened just a week after his wife, Meredith, gave birth to their first child, Bennett, makes it all the more shocking.

Scheffler and Ryder Cup teammate Sam Burns organize a Bible group attended by other PGA Tour players and caddies, and there has never been a whiff of scandal associated with the 27-year-old.

Before returning to action at the USPGA — after taking a three-week break to enjoy being a father for the first time — Scheffler spoke about how happy his life was now.

He said: “At home it was a good time to reflect a little on my career so far and where my life has gone.

“I married my high school sweetheart and always wanted to play professional golf, and of course I did, won two Masters and became No. 1 in the world.

“When I was at home, I was sitting there with a newborn in my arms and the green jacket in the closet. It was a very special moment, I think.”

A moment of madness, or confusion, could turn your world upside down.
