Haas was on the 10th hole at the Omni La Costa during the second round of the NCAA championship when he received a text about Murray’s death.

“Grayson Murray has died,” the text said.

Murray only spent one semester at Wake Forest, but Haas had a connection with him.

“These are your guys when you recruit them and they come to your university,” Haas said.

“I feel bad for his dad and mom. Eric is a good man. He runs a good junior golf tour (Tarheel Junior Golf Tour) and let my son, Kyle, play a lot and start junior golf.

“That’s the hardest thing, thinking about his parents.”

Haas met Murray when he was 12 years old on a golf course and was already showing his potential.

“He looked like a Tour pro,” Haas said.

Murray had opened up in recent years about his struggles with anxiety, depression and alcoholism.

Hass explained in 2017 that he was concerned about Murray’s health.

Haas admitted he hasn’t had much contact with Murray in recent years, but has always watched him play on the PGA Tour.

His Wake Forest team had a rough day at the NCAA Championships, but Haas could only think about Murray during the day.

“It makes you stop and think,” Haas said.

“I’ve been doing this for 26 years and I’ve probably had about 100 guys that I recruited and played for me, and it’s a sad day.

“Emotionally, I thought about him a lot today, believe it or not, during the round. We didn’t play very well and I wanted to be upset, but at the same time…”

Haas didn’t finish evaluating his team before stopping and leaving a message for Murray.

“I’m going to miss him.”

Murray turned pro in 2015, winning three times on the Korn Ferry Tour and twice on the PGA Tour.

Most recently, he won the Sony Open in January.
