MacIntyre finished one stroke better than the competition by finishing 16 under par at Hamilton Golf and Country Club.

After sealing victory, the world number 76 burst into tears and hugged his father Dougie.

MacIntyre, 27, said: “I’m speechless. This is everything, for me and my family, for my girlfriend, my team.

“I’m crying with joy and laughing because I didn’t think it was possible.”

A pep talk from his dad was also vital, as MacIntrye explained: “He was giving me a hard time when I was walking from the 10th tee to the fairway.

Look, he was a sporty guy, he knows how to win, he knows how to lose, he’s been through everything.

“He noticed my head spinning a little and said, ‘What have you been working on for the last eight, 10 weeks?’ when I realized what the problem was.”

Tears ran down the face of his father, Dougie, who added: “I’m a lawn mower, not a caddy. Unbelievable.

Dougie replaced his son as last year’s Ryder Cup winner with Team Europe among caddies after splitting with Mike Burrows.

Before the weekend’s action began, MacIntyre revealed: “Yes, it was an emergency and he took responsibility.

“He’s a good golfer himself, but at this kind of level, he’s a little lost.”

MacIntyre’s victory takes home a check for £1.3 million.

And he is the first Scot to taste victory on the PGA Tour since Martin Laird in 2020.
