My dad stepped in and helped me win the £1.3 million jackpot for my first PGA Tour title – now I’m going to pay off his mortgage

Few people would have bet on Robert MacIntyre winning the Canadian Open.

The 27-year-old Scot was given a 1.2 per cent chance of success at Hamilton Golf and Country Club before the tournament began.

But MacIntyre shocked the likes of Rory McIlory by winning by one stroke and finishing at 16 under par.

And his first PGA Tour victory came with his father Dougie as his “emergency” caddy.

MacIntyre’s victory saw him pocket an impressive £1.3 million.

And the world number 76 plans to thank his father by paying off his mortgage.

MacIntyre was asked if his father was in line to receive 10% of his earnings and he replied: “He will get a good salary from it.

“I think I need to get rid of some money now for tax reasons.

“But he’ll do fine with it. He deserves.

“My mom and dad will be mortgage-free now, and life looks a little better on that side of things.

“But he just wants me to do well because I’m his son and there’s no angle to it, there’s nothing.”

MacIntyre and his father wiped away tears in an emotional interview after sealing victory.

Dougie, who works as head groundsman at Glencruitten Golf Club, said: “I’m a lawn mower, not a caddy. Unbelievable.”

MacIntyre added: “I’m speechless. This is everything, for me and my family, for my girlfriend, my team.

“I’m crying with joy and laughing because I didn’t think it was possible.”

And a pep talk from his father was vital to his victory, with MacIntyre revealing: “He was attacking me as I was walking from the tenth tee to the fairway.

“Look, he was a sportsman, he knows how to win, he knows how to lose, he’s been through everything.

“He noticed my head spinning a little and said, ‘What have you been working on for the last eight, 10 weeks?’ when I realized what the problem was.”
