But a tracker at their clubs showed they had not left London, despite Poulter seeing the situation drop after checking in.

So an angry Poulter took to social media to criticize British Airways for its failure.

He said: “FFS @British_Airways so disappointing. I checked in two hours and 30 minutes before the flight. What could be the excuse.

“I just got the email three hours into the flight. I wouldn’t have bothered flying if you weren’t sending my golf clubs. I can’t get fresh air.”

He continued: “Talk about @British_Airways.

“The golf bag was not overweight. I enlarged it, examined it and watched it go down the conveyor belt. #Pathetic.”

Poulter, 48, also claimed that his colleague Henrik Stenson’s golf clubs were also left behind at Heathrow.

The Brit also had a lot to complain about when he got on the plane, saying: “The guy in front is snoring so loud it’s permanent turbulence.”

Poulter hopes to forget his nightmarish journey when he tees off at the Golf Club of Houston on Thursday – if he gets his clubs in time.
