So much so that DeChambeau – known as golf’s Mad Scientist – decided NAME all nine of his golf clubs.

This week at Pinehurst he placed in the top 10 on the first two days of the tournament and is in prime position to play his second US Open main.

But DeChambeauwho uses single-length Cobra irons, doesn’t just refer to his irons and wedges by their normal numbers.

Instead, when he’s on the course with his caddy Brian Zeigler – he refers to each one by their carefully chosen nicknames.

Some are based on the Greek alphabet, others on their golf heroes, and one follows an American sports hero from the 1940s.

Let’s look at the nicknames one by one.

He starts with DeChambeau’s 3-iron, which is generally used for a shot in the 210-yard range.

DeChambeau was clearly inspired by the third letter of the Greek alphabet.

Azalea

Azalea is arguably Augusta National’s most famous hole, named after the vibrant flowers that line the fairway.

His 5-iron is named after his favorite par-5 hole on the famous American course.

The 2020 US Open champion’s 7-iron is called the Tin Cup.

As it is Kevin Costner’s favorite club when he played Roy “Tin Cup” McAvoy in the iconic 1996 film.

8 Ball

He likes the 8 ball… this one is pretty easy.

Jackie

DeChambeau asks his caddy for ‘Jackie’ when requesting his 9-iron.

The club is typically 42 degrees and corresponds to the number 42 jersey of iconic American baseball player Jackie Robinson.

Herman Keizer

His pitching wedge is nicknamed ‘Herman’ and is used for distances of around 110 yards.

The club has 46 degrees and Herman Keizer won the Masters in 1946.

Jimmy Demaret

The DeChambeau wedge is named after former Texan golfer Jimmy Demaret because it is 50 degrees.

And Demaret’s final Masters victory came in 1950.

Mr Ward

Sand wedges are 55 degrees and Harvie Ward was a low amateur in the 1955 US Open as well as winning the US Amateur that year.

King

Its lob wedge pays homage to the late great Arnold Palmer, known as ‘The King’.

Arnie is considered one of Bryson’s golf heroes, along with many other stars on the PGA Tour today.

There doesn’t appear to be a name for their 4-iron yet.

DeChambeau is currently playing in the US Open after narrowly losing the USPGA Championship to Xander Schauffele last month.

He posted the lowest score ever recorded at a PGA Championship last month at Valhalla.

But he was forced to watch Schauffele beat him in one shot.
