TIGER Woods’ 2004 marriage was destined to fail and triggered his devastating decline, claims a new book about the golf legend’s tumultuous career.
Writer James Pattison has taken a forensic look at Woods’ incredible fall from grace in his new book Tiger, Tiger.
He details every momentous moment of one of sports’ most storied careers, from the sensational highs of 15 major wins to the crushing lows of divorce, death-defying accidents and serial infidelity that left his reputation in tatters.
ACCIDENT HORROR
Woods may have stunned the sporting world with his incredible rise to the top of golf following his 1997 Masters triumph.
However, it was the events of December 1, 2009 that marked the beginning of a shocking decline.
Pattison details the exchange between Florida Police Chief Daniel Saylor and an ESPN reporter after the sports star was injured in a car accident outside his Windermere home.
“My two officers arrived on scene and noticed Tiger Woods lying on the ground in front of his vehicle with his wife providing first aid,” Saylor said.
Woods had crashed into a fire hydrant, before his wife, Elin Nordergen, ran out and used one of her clubs to break the window and pull her husband to safety.
It was, as Pattison writes, a crazy situation.
However, storm clouds were already starting to form.
IMPULSED BEHAVIOR
Swedish model Elin, who Woods met through fellow golfer, Swedish player Jesper Parnevik, and married in 2004 in Barbados, was made aware of tabloid reports that revealed Woods was having an affair.
Pattison said there was a “simmering tension in the air” before the car crash, even though the couple were already very wary of the media spotlight.
“Tiger downplayed and denied the allegations,” Pattison continued. “Elin wanted to believe him. It didn’t make any sense.”
However, the deeper she delved into the story, the more convinced she became about Woods’ infidelity.
Pattison says Woods successfully arranged for a previous National Enquirer story about another woman to be dropped in exchange for an appearance on the cover of Men’s Fitness — the publications were both owned by the same company.
There was no escape this time, however.
BOMBASTIC TEXTS
Elin waited for him to fall asleep before browsing his phone and finding “romantic and sexual text messages” to “several women,” including one to nightclub hostess Rachel Uchitel that day.
“You are the only person I have ever loved,” he allegedly texted.
Elin then, according to Pattison, pretended to be Woods, sending a series of messages to Uchitel, before revealing herself.
“I knew it was you, I know everything,” Erin wrote.
Everything started to fall apart.
Pattison describes how a desperate Woods locked himself in the bathroom and began madly contacting other women he was seeing.
Elin, however, had already left a voicemail with a woman, Jaimee Grubbs.
“You know who you are,” she allegedly said, “because you’re having sex with my husband.”
RELATIONSHIP BREAK
Their marriage was collapsing, with Parnevik claiming he had “lost all respect” for the American woman he had married to a woman he considered a little sister.
It was a nightmare scenario that embarrassed Woods and destroyed his good-guy image.
Still, Pattison claims their relationship was doomed from the start.
He says it was love at first sight for Woods. Elin, however, wasn’t so sure.
Pattison says she was “not impressed” when she was asked out by a third party, claiming it was “weird and pathetic.”
Elin, just 22 at the time, had a boyfriend in Sweden and despite his prominence on the golf course, Woods “wasn’t her type.”
Their long-distance relationship eventually ends, although Pattison reports that photographer Bingo Rimer said that “she told me a million times, ‘I’m so stressed out about this whole celebrity thing, the media focus.’ “
Tiger’s car crashes
2009: Police are called after Woods’ then-wife is forced to break into her husband’s car, which crashed into a fire hydrant, a tree and some hedges near their Florida home.
The golf star was treated for minor injuries but her marriage was in crisis when tabloid revelations about a series of affairs began to emerge.
2021: Woods is involved in a single-vehicle collision in Los Angeles on February 23, which caused his car to roll over.
The Los Angeles Sheriff’s Department said the car “sustained extensive damage,” with Woods driving at more than 80 mph. He was lucky to survive, but suffered multiple injuries to his legs.
Tiger finally gets his girlfriend after “trying his luck for months” and the two begin spending time together.
Two years later, they got married and in 2009 they had two children – daughter Sam and son Charlie.
However, in August 2010, Elin’s $100 million divorce was settled.
In the spring of that year, Pattison writes, custody arrangements were worked out and Woods moved into his Jupiter Island mansion, purchased in 2006.
Meanwhile, his ex-wife has settled in North Palm Beach, 30 miles away.
“The reason we don’t live under the same roof is because Dad made some mistakes,” Woods reportedly told his children.
FRESH DISASTER
What perhaps also hurt the embarrassed sports icon was his son Charlie’s response when asked who his idol was.
“Would you rather be Lionel Messi on the golf course or Tiger Woods on the golf course?” he was asked at an event organized by his father.
The answer was the maestro of Argentine football.
“Well,” said Woods, who was out of action with an injury, “he’s right.”
The book also details the drunk driving arrest in 2017 and the shocking car accident in Los Angeles in early 2021, from which Woods was lucky to escape with his life. The previous month, his fifth back surgery was completed in another difficult attempt to save his career.
The crash on February 21 left him with screws, pins and stabilizing rods in his leg, as well as damage to his feet – the third time in a dozen years that police have been called to the scene of an accident involving arguably the world’s greatest golfer. . history.
While his rise to the top was unforgettable, the 48-year-old’s death was a chilling warning to anyone about how quickly life can change.
Woods’ majesty on the greens will be legendary, as will the reckless behavior off the course that will forever tarnish his legacy.
“His impact on the game is incalculable,” Pattison concludes by quoting USGA President Fred Perpall. “There is no doubt that golf would not be the same without Tiger.”
