IF you believe the bookies, only Rory McIlroy and Jon Rahm stand between Americans and medalists at this week’s Olympic golf tournament.

World No. 1 and Masters champion Scottie Scheffler is the heavy favorite to take the gold, with the best price at 4-1, with reigning Olympic champion Xander Schauffele – a two-time Major winner this year – being second best with 6-1.

McIlroy, an 8-1 shot, and Rahm are the next best on the market, with the Spaniard available at 10-1, one spot below Collin Morikawa, the man the Yanks hope will join Scheffler and Schauffele on the podium.

But come on, it’s the Olympics and everyone loves to see an underdog do well. And it certainly happened in Tokyo, where the men who won silver and bronze behind Schauffele were Rory Sabbatini and CT Pan.

In fact, Pan beat the likes of McIlroy, Morikawa Hideki Matsuyama and three other players in a mass play-off for the bronze medal.

So let’s hope for a few more shocks and try to have some fun with some of the longer priced competitors.

Golf Tips

The name that stands out most on the market is Guido Migliozzi, with an impressive 80-1.

The Italian was an impressive winner of the French Open on the Olympic course in 2022, and local knowledge is likely to be invaluable on a course as tricky as the LE Golf National.

Migliozzi won again last month when he triumphed at the KLM Open in the Netherlands.

He also played some attractive golf over the weekend when he finished tied for 31st in the Open, so he has to make the list.

His fellow Italian, the extremely likeable Matteo Manassero, has made an exciting return to form this year. At 150-1 he’s also worth a little interest.

Likewise, French duo Matthieu Pavon and Viktor Perez are expected to come into play at odds of 70-1 and 90-1 respectively.

Pavon had a great season on the PGA Tour, while Perez’s third-place finish at the Canadian Open and a top-ten finish at the Scottish Open were good efforts.

They have a duty to play the French Open every year. Your inside knowledge of the intricacies of the Olympic route may be worth a try or two.

Tommy Fleetwood has a huge following after winning the French Open at Le National in 2017 – before enjoying huge success on the same course as part of the ‘Moliwood’ combination that won all four matches of the 2018 Ryder Cup.

But that French Open win was a fluke. Fleetwood missed the cut in every other start in the event. So the 20-1 odds are not overly generous.

So why not look even further down the list – and throw two more 150-1 shots at Emiliano Grillo and Stephan Jaeger?

We may not get a golf medalist – or even a silver and bronze winner. But with most bookmakers offering at least six places, the each-way market appears to be the one to explore.

It could be worth employing the same method for the women’s event, which begins the day after the men’s tournament ends on August 4.

Nelly Korda is the market leader here at 11-2, which isn’t surprising after her six wins in the first half of the season – although she seems to have been on a roll recently.

What is surprising is to see world No. 4 Amy Yang at 40-1. OK, she had injury problems last year, but she won the Women’s PGA Championship a few times ago. With those odds, I’d be happy to stand her on one leg!”

Lilia Vu is a personal favorite, and 11-1 seems fair for the world number 2, while the feisty Carlota Ciganda is a reliable player to give her a run for her money.

She is widely available at 33-1, and one bookmaker is even calling odds at 40-1 on Yang.

Le Golf National is a tough test, which can bring out long-time players who may not be the most consistent golfers. Sweden’s Maja Stark fits that profile, so the 70-1 odds seem quite tempting.
