It wasn’t just women who donned their most elegant dresses today – men also chose their best suits for the racing extravaganza.

Of course, it’s not Women’s Day without race lovers sporting an array of eye-catching hats and high-heeled shoes, paired with sparkly accessories and flawless makeup.

Founded in 1539, Chester is the oldest racecourse still in operation in the world.

The racecourse has consistently been awarded the Gold Standard Award by the Racehorse Owners Association (ROA) since the award’s inception and received the prestigious title of Large Racecourse of the Year when the award was launched in 2015 and again in 2018 and 2019.

Boodles May Festival 2024

This is Chester Racecourse’s most prestigious three-day race meeting, which takes place at the beginning of May each year and kicks off the racing season for the remainder of the year.

The Boodles May Festival consists of three race meetings – Trials Day, Ladies Day and Chester Cup Day – with each meeting having its own unique character and personality.

For example, Ladies Day is an iconic event often used by racing lovers to showcase their best dresses and trendy outfits paired to impress.

Meanwhile, Trials Day and Chester Cup Day are fan favorites among hardcore racegoers, as the annual Chester Vase race is used as a trial run for the prestigious Epsom Derby – and the Chester Cup race essentially eliminates the best jockeys and racehorses.

This year will be an even more special celebration as racing superfans will pay homage to 200 years of the Chester Cup.

Last year’s race was won by Metier (5-1) under Saffie Osborne, who took victory in the Chester Cup on the final day.

Unfortunately, Hidden Law broke down after his victory in the Boodles Chester Vase Stakes

‘Absolute disgust

Race participants experienced “absolute heartbreak” yesterday when Hidden Law – the winner of the big race – suffered a fatal injury just meters past the post.

The Charlie Appleby-trained winner had just got over the line in the Group 3 Boodles Chester Vase – a key event for the Epsom Derby.

However, the rider suffered a fatal injury when being pulled by the Norwegian-British jockey William Buick.

commentator Richard Hoiles said: “From poetry in motion to outright heartbreak.

“Oh, this is absolutely horrible, it’s absolutely heartbreaking for everyone involved.

“Hidden Law broke badly after the running line and it is also a serious injury.

“William Buick holding the horse, which is quickly attended to… and that is a horrible postscript to the Chester Vase.

“Hidden Law is the winner of the Chester Vase but this is a terrible incident just over the line and there is nothing more you can say.

“A horrible end to the day – the horse is being looked after but looks very serious indeed.”

ITV presenter Leonna Mayor added: “It’s horrible.

Confirming the death, the jockey explained how it happened: “He fractured his leg, unfortunately.

“He crossed the line without any problems and when he crossed the road he made a false step and basically fell into it.

“It’s one of those really weird accidents. Unfortunately, we can only continue with what we have seen and will not see again in the future, it is very disappointing.”
