Mets were eliminated for second straight game in 4-0 loss to Mariners

THE Mets were shut out for the second night in a row in Seattle, recording just four hits in a 4-0 loss to the Mariners. It is the first time that NY has been left out in consecutive games this season.

New York (61-56) started the day 0.5 games ahead of Atlanta for the final Wild Card spot, but the Braves snapped their six-game losing streak and are now 0.5 games ahead of the Mets.

Here are the conclusions…

– Seattle closed out the first with a beautiful double play and carried that momentum into the bottom half of the inning. After consecutive starts, dominant starts, Sean Manaea leave a double advantage to Victor Robleswho then stole the third in Francisco Álvarezis thrown back to the mound. Manaea gave up another double to Randy Arozarenagiving the Mariners a 1-0 lead. The left-hander got a strikeout, but then gave up a third double of the inning to Justin Turnermaking it 2–0, and later allowed an RBI single Mitch Haniger this gave Seattle an early 3–0 lead.

– Manaea walked two in the second, but managed to escape the inning without taking any further damage. That trend continued in the third, when he walked the bases loaded and emerged unscathed thanks to good catches from Harrison Bader and Tyron Taylor.

– New York bats struggled against Mariners starter Logan Gilberto all night. Francisco Lindor opened the game with a single, but Gilbert retired the next eight Mets in a row until the third. Gilbert made it ninth in a row when Lindor lined out to open the fourth before Brandon Nimmo walked to give NY its second baserunner of the night. JD Martinez and Pedro Alonso couldn’t make anything happen and the Mets’ scoring streak continued.

– Huascar Brazoban came in to pitch the fourth and pitched 1-2-3 consecutive innings to keep the score at 3-0. It’s his second straight appearance with two hitless innings of work. Reed Garrettwhat was activated from the IL before the gametook the mound in the sixth and struck out the side.

– Martinez led off the seventh with a single for the team’s third hit of the night, but the Mets were unable to capitalize and Gilbert retired the next three consecutive hits. Phil Maton ran into some trouble in the bottom of the seventh when Turner drove in another run on a single to left field to make it 4-0.

New York did not have a late-inning rally and extended its scoreless streak to 19 innings.

Game MVP: Logan Gilbert

The 27-year-old has made a huge comeback after missing the last three matches. He pitched seven scoreless innings, allowing just three hits with six strikeouts and one walk.
