New York Yankees third baseman Jazz Chisholm has a torn UCL in his left elbow and is likely on the injured list.

Manager Aaron Boone revealed the diagnosis to Yankees Beat reporters Tuesday night before New York’s game against the Chicago White Sox. Boone said surgery to repair the injury is an option. Chisholm will undergo further evaluation to determine the severity of the injury and next step.

Chisholm injured his elbow sliding headfirst into home plate during the Yankees’ 12-2 loss to the White Sox on Monday.

He left the game after the injury and underwent imaging tests on Tuesday to determine the diagnosis.

The news is a significant blow to a Yankees team engaged in a battle with the Baltimore Orioles for the AL East title.

The Yankees acquired Chisholm from the Miami Marlins in July before the trade deadline. Since arriving, he has provided a jolt of energy to the clubhouse and a boost to an offense that has struggled to produce beyond sluggers Aaron Judge and Juan Soto during several dry spells throughout the season.

Despite the offensive struggles, the Yankees (70-50) enter Tuesday’s game with the third-best record in the American League and trail the Orioles (70-49) by 1/2 game for first place in the AL East. They will have to move forward in the near future in the division battle without Chisholm’s services.

This is a breaking story that will be updated.
