The Yankees clinched a split of the four-game series with the Seattle Mariners, winning 5-0 on Thursday afternoon.
Here are the conclusions…
–Luis Gil, Coming off a 14-hit performance against the Chicago White Sox in his last start, it was once again excellent. The right-hander allowed just one hit in 6.1 innings, with that hit being a single infield hit that could not be controlled by Antonio Volpe. Gil struck out eight batters and walked two, reducing his season ERA to 2.11.
Gil, who didn’t even imagine being in the Yankees rotation until Gerrit Cole was shut down due to injury set a new Yankees record by recording his 11th consecutive game of at least 5.0 innings and two earned runs or less. He received a nice ovation from the crowd as he left the mound.
-The Yankees got strong contributions from their big bats. Fish, Giancarlo Stanton fired a solo shot 445 feet into the center of Luis Castillo in the second round. Aaron Judgewho had a multi-hit game and now has 33 hits in the last 25 games, scored in the third, and Juan Soto ran in an RBI single in the seventh.
When the Yankees have their top sluggers producing at the same time, their lineup is as formidable as they come.
This also marked the 40th time Stanton and Judge scored in the same game.
-Every Yankee in the surprising lineup had at least one hit, except Anthony Rizzo, who also added an RBI and also reached when hit by a pitch. Volpe, judge and Oswaldo Cabrera all had multi-hit performances.
–clay holmes came in to pitch in a no-save situation in the ninth. After allowing four earned runs in a loss to the M’s on Monday (the first runs the closer has allowed all season), Holmes allowed a pair of singles but also struck out two batters to secure the 5-0 victory.
Who was the game’s MVP?
Gil, whose 2.11 ERA is the best among all Yankees starters.
