O Yankees was on the verge of a sweep of the San Diego Padres, but ended up suffering a 5-2 loss.
Conclusions from Sunday’s game
1. Yankees RHP Clark Schmidt continues to deliver in his place in the rotation, but an out in the sixth inning after San Diego (28-28) reached first and second base with no one out was the turning point for the final outcome. Schmidt (5-3, 2.52 ERA), who walked 59 hits on 101 pitches, struck out six and walked three while scattering three hits.

2.SS Antonio Volpe is on a 19-game hitting streak thanks to his sixth-inning single from the right side Joe Musgrove. Volpe’s Year 2 jumper, who stole second base and later scored via Juan Sotois double to right center field after a jumper Fernando Tatis Jr.is on full display as he raises his .282/.355/.435 slash line.
3. Outside of Volpe and Soto putting the Yankees on top for a moment in the sixth, the Padres and Musgrove (5.66 ERA) kept New York quiet. Musgrove surrendered one run on six hits, while striking out five and walking none in 5.1 IP.
4. The Yankees fought back but refused to go away completely. IF Alex VerdugoThe leadoff home run in the ninth inning, his seventh long ball this season, stopped the bleeding and offered an answer after the Padres widened the gap to 5-1 with a seventh-inning run on Machado’s double against LHP Caleb Ferguson.
The effort from Verdugo, who is slashing .261/.324/.431 with 28 RBI this season, deserves a tip. Ultimately, though, the Yankees didn’t have enough to withstand the sweep. As a result, New York’s winning streak ends at four.
