To Chicago Puppies are signing former Mets reliever Jorge López to a minor league contract, according to the Cub’s MiLB transactions page. Atlético reported the signing for the first time.

López, 31, sparked league-wide controversy after throwing his glove into the stands at Citi Field after being thrown out in the eighth inning of a 10-3 loss to the Dodgers on May 29.

After the game, the controversy continued. Lopez told reporters that he did not regret the explosion. And comments from him created even more confusion after he reportedly called the Mets “the worst team in all of MLB” but later said he meant to say he was the “worst teammate in MLB.” all the MLB shit.”

There was confusion over whether López said worst “teammate” or worst “team” in MLB. A native Spanish speaker, he later told a team employee that he intended to say both. But on Instagram the next morning, López blamed the media for “making things worse,” arguing that he said “teammate” the whole time.

“Whoever listens to me, I said ‘teammate’ and what I said about the situation, I (have) been the worst teammate, thank the media for making the situation worse,” he said.

Shortly after the outburst and postgame media session, the Mets designated López for assignment, effectively severing ties with the reliever.

López has played in 28 games in the majors with the Mets this season. He owns a 3.76 ERA in 26.1 innings pitched. He struck out 19 batters while walking 11 as well.

The Cubs are desperate for bullpen help this season, ranking 24th in MLB this season with a 4.47 bullpen ERA.
