SAN FRANCISCO — Blake Snell threw a bullpen session before Saturday’s game against the Los Angeles Angels and could face hitters in the next stage of his rehabilitation from a left groin strain suffered in the June 2 game against the New York Yankees.

Snell, the reigning NL Cy Young Award winner, was on the injured list since June 3 and may come out on Tuesday.

What happens next has yet to be determined, though manager Bob Melvin expects Snell to face some type of live at-bat.

“He’s going to need to do something, whether it’s facing hitters, a simulated situation or a game,” Melvin told reporters at Oracle Park. “He’s going to need to do something where he faces hitters in a game-like situation.”

Snell’s first season with the Giants was rough, for sure.

The 31-year-old lefty has not pitched five complete innings in any of his six starts this season, Winless is 0-3 with a 9.51 ERA – the highest of his career and by far the highest among all San pitchers. initials of Francisco.

Snell’s inability to go deep into games is symptomatic of the Giants’ entire rotation this season. San Francisco’s starters have logged the third-fewest innings this season, which has put pressure on the bullpen.

This is Snell second stint at IL this season. He also lost time on the Paternity List.

“We’ll see how he feels, what’s next for him,” Melvin said. “But (he) seems to be progressing, throwing all the pitches. Kind of an up and down today, where he faked an entry after letting go. We’ll talk later about what’s next for him.”
