White Sox score tying on apparent intentional hesitation, beat Diamondbacks 9-2 for rare road win originally appeared in NBC Sports Chicago
PHOENIX (AP) — Chicago scored its first run after what appeared to be an intentional fumble, Lenyn Sosa hit a three-run homer and the White Sox got a rare road victory with a 9-2 win over the Arizona Diamondbacks on Saturday night.
Erick Fedde (5-1) was sharp, allowing two runs on eight hits in six innings with six strikeouts.
Chicago had a lot of pop one night after getting one run in the series opener, finishing with four home runs and 12 hits.
Andrew Vaughn hit a home run and had three RBIs, Korey Lee hit a two-run shot and Paul DeJong hit a solo home run in the White Sox’ seventh victory in 31 road games.
The Diamondbacks gave them a boost in the third inning with what may have been an intentional balk by Thyago Vieira (0-1).
With Martín Maldonado at second, the Arizona right-hander threw several pitches on the ground, prompting manager Torey Lovullo to pay the mound a visit. Lovullo appeared to tell Vieira to drop the ball and he did so before the next pitch, moving the slow Maldonado to third. Vaughn followed with a Maldonado single.
DeJong set up the White Sox to hit a home run off the pool deck in right-center in the next inning and Vaughn made it 4-1 with a two-run home run in the fifth. Sosa hit his second home run of the season in the seventh inning and Lee hit his sixth in the ninth.
Plate umpire Nick Mahrley ejected Lovullo in the eighth inning for arguing over several borderline strike calls against the Diamondbacks.
Fedde came away with the lead in the previous four matches, but received no decision in each.
The Diamondbacks jumped to Chicago’s right when Ketel Marte followed Corbin Carroll’s leadoff double with a run-scoring single. Fedde recovered from a bases-loaded single in the second inning and gave up a sacrifice fly to Joc Pederson in the fifth.
