Max Fried Outplays Nestor Cortes as Yankees Defeat Braves 3-1

The Yankees lost Sunday afternoon’s game to the Atlanta Braves, losing 3-1 at Yankee Stadium.

Here are the key takeaways…

-Yankees hitters simply had no answers for Max Frito. The lefty allowed just three singles in five innings. He allowed one run in the sixth (more on that in a minute), but ended up going 6.0 innings, allowing just one earned run on six hits with four strikeouts and no walks.

–Nestor Cortes it was almost as good. The lefty struck out the side in the first inning on 14 pitches and got through the lineup for the first time without allowing a hit.

But Jarred Kelenic hit a solo home run with two outs in the third, just clearing the wall in right-center, and the Braves scored two more in the fifth on Kelenic’s RBI and Ozzie Albies.

Cortes threw 7.0 strong innings, allowing three earned runs on five hits. He struck out seven and walked no-hitter.

-The Yankees finally went ahead in the sixth, with Trent Grisham Coming to score on a Antonio Volpe double. But Volpe’s aggressiveness on the base paths hurt him, as he was thrown out at third base on a ground ball to the shortstop. Volpe would probably have scored from second place in a Aaron Judge single late in the inning, but the Bombers were unable to score again in the frame.

–Ben RiceMichael’s early numbers may not surprise you, but he has faced a lot of lefty pitching, including Fried on Sunday. In the bottom of the fifth, Rice stayed and lined a clean single to left center. He then chose right again Pierce Johnson in the seventh, increasing his batting average to .294.

-If the Yankees want to take home the World Series title this season, they will need to figure out how to protect themselves Juan Soto and Judge in the lineup. On Sunday, the Yankees’ 4-6 hitters – Alex Verdugo, Gleyber TorresoneDJ LeMahieu – got a combination of 0 out of 11.

The Yankees traded for JD Davis on Sunday, but if Giancarlo Stanton is wasting significant time, they will need to find some scam in the middle of the order.
