Purdy surprisingly earns less per year than former Mets slugger Bonilla originally appeared in NBC Sports Bay Area
Monday will be considered one of the most important days of History of sports in the Bay Area.
Why? Because it’s the day sports fans were reminded that 49ers quarterback Brock Purdy basically makes next to nothing financially, of course, compared to other professional athletes — even retired ones.
Nothing else happened in the bay on Mondayright?
Regardless, ESPN’s Adam Schefter acknowledged the infamous “Bobby Bonilla Day” on Monday in a post on X, formerly known as Twitter, and shined a light on the 61-year-old’s ridiculous annual payouts, comparing them to Purdy’s. . cheap contract from San Francisco.
Happy Bobby Bonilla Day: Bonilla is expected to collect $1.193 million from the NY Mets today, as he will do every July 1 through the year 2035, which is $208,000 more than the $985,000 base salary that 49ers QB Brock Purdy will win this season. pic.twitter.com/U7pBRLKvVq

For those who don’t know, “Bobby Bonilla Day” arose because the New York Mets postponed the third baseman’s contract acquired in 2000 to be paid in later years, with interest.
“Instead of paying Bonilla the $5.9 million [in 2000]the Mets agreed to make annual payments of nearly $1.2 million for 25 years beginning July 1, 2011, including negotiated 8 percent interest,” he explained. ESPN’s Dan Mullen in an article published on Monday.
“At the time, Mets ownership was invested in a Bernie Madoff account that promised double-digit returns, and the Mets were prepared to make a significant profit if Madoff’s account came to fruition – but that didn’t work out.”
Bonilla, who has not played for the Mets since 1999 and in the MLB since 2001, was paid $1.2 million on Monday.
Meanwhile, Purdy makes less than that annually, even though he was only in Super Bowl LVIII and was a 2023 NFL MVP finalist – seems fair enough.
Purdy is in the final year of his four-year, $3.7 million rookie contract with the 49ers. As Schefter noted, the Iowa State product has a base salary of $985,000 for the 2024 NFL season.
Ironically, Bonilla is receiving an additional $208,000 this year.
Considering that athletes are making more money than ever with contracts approaching 10 figures, it’s pretty hilarious that Purdy – even though he’s 24 – makes less than Bonilla.
