Webb remains a beacon of stability for the Giants’ chaotic rotation originally appeared in NBC Sports Bay Area
During a season in which there was little to zero stability in the Giants’ starting rotation, Logan Webb was practically unshakable.
Webb had another classic game against the Atlanta Braves on Thursday, throwing seven very strong innings while pacing San Francisco for a 4-2 victory this took the club one step closer to the .500 mark.
It certainly wasn’t anything new or unexpected.
Giants fans have become accustomed to seeing a well-shot game whenever their durable and efficient ace hits the rubber.
Webb leads the National League with 19 starts and tops all of MLB with 119 innings pitched. He has already won seven this season and will likely play one more game before the All-Star break.
This leaves the 27-year-old in excellent shape to reach double-digit wins for the fourth consecutive season, establishing himself as the team’s ace.
His final gem came on Independence Day in front of a crowd of nearly 41,000 in Atlanta and secured the Giants’ third consecutive series victory.
“It’s easy to tackle,” Webb told reporters at Truist Park. “You have the Fourth of July, the house is packed and you are playing a good team, a very, very, very good team. I had a lot of adrenaline and it never stopped.”
As has been the case for most of the 2024 season, Webb’s biggest problems started early on.
The Braves’ first two batters of the game reached base, and Atlanta scored its first run on a throwing error by right fielder Mike Yastrzemski. Webb got Marcel Ozuna to hit before Matt Olson scored and Austin Riley hit a sacrifice fly to drive in another run.
That was all the scoring the Braves could muster with Webb and two relievers. Webb is now 3-0 in five starts at Truist Park.
In his 19 starts overall this season, Webb has an impressive 5.21 first-inning ERA. That’s almost a point more than Webb in any other entry.
“It’s typical of a lot of good starters,” Giants coach Bob Melvin said. “This is the best chance you have of reaching them. They made some runs in the first and then (Webb) got dialed in in terms of command, reading the swings and doing what he does.
It’s certainly not surprising because Webb leads the National League in innings pitched during the 2024 season. The game against the Braves marked the 11thth it was the time this year that he logged at least seven innings.
The Giants’ flagship also ranks second in the NL with the fewest home runs allowed per nine innings.
However, the nagging issues he had coming out of the first round remain the biggest obstacle Webb has yet to resolve.
“I need to figure something out,” said Webb, who was winless in his previous three starts. “I don’t know what it is, I couldn’t tell you. But it’s frustrating. It’s not a fun feeling to be a starter and get your team in trouble early on.
“Obviously the boys are back. It was amazing to see.”
Fans of The Orange and Black have been saying pretty much the same thing every time Webb gets on the mount. He’s been amazing to watch all season.
