Nightengale also reports that while rival GMs are unsure whether Crochet will be traded, Chicago still “fully intends” to trade him, and that a recent offer from the San Diego Padres was “quickly rejected.”
This report is in line with what SNY contributor John Harper has heard from those in the know, with scouts saying that Jones or prospect Chase Hampton would probably have to be involved in any exchange for Crochê, as he still has two more years of control of the team.
Jones, who represented the Yankees in the 2024 All-Star Futures Game, is the No. 2 prospect in the Yankees’ system and the No. 74 prospect in baseball, according to MLB Pipeline. The 23-year-old former first-round pick got off to a slower start this season for Double-A Somerset, but he has 10 home runs in 73 games with the Patriots.
Crochet was used as a starter for Chicago this season after being used exclusively as a reliever throughout his first 72 career starts. In 20 starts, Crochet achieved a 3.02 ERA with an impressive 150 strikeouts in 107.1 innings.
