Kodai Senga is about to get back together Metsbut he has one more step to complete first.
Senga, who made three rehab starts while recovering from an injury, is ready to make another start for Triple-A Syracuse, reports Newsday’s Tim Healey.
The Mets were deciding whether to activate Senga or have him begin more rehab.
Senga threw 66 pitches in 4.2 innings for Syracuse last Sunday, which means it’s fair to believe he’ll be limited to around 80 pitches during his final rehab start at Triple-A.
If Senga is able to advance to around 80 pitches, it could set him up to stretch his pitch count into the 90s during his first big league start of the season.
In his three rehab appearances, Senga threw 10.0 innings, allowing just one earned run and striking out 12.
“I’m definitely making progress,” he said through a translator after his most recent debut. “Obviously it’s not perfect, but it’s getting there and I was able to perform today and I’m growing with each rehab outing, which has been good.”
Senga was sidelined all season due to a right shoulder strain he suffered during spring training and several setbacks – including nerve inflammation in his right triceps.
The plan is for the Mets to have a six-player rotation when Senga returns.
