O Mets bounced back to defeat the Miami Marlins 6-4 in the four-game series finale on Monday night at LoDepot Park.
Here are some lessons…
– David Peterson It’s been tremendous for the Mets since returning from the injured list and he put in another great effort in this one. He resolved some command issues by pitching for the first time in 11 days, but limited Miami to just two runs on six hits, while walking four and striking out four in five innings. He picked up his fifth win of the season and the Mets have now won eight straight games as a starter.
– Jeff McNeil continues to turn things around at the plate since returning from the All-Star break, as he started the scoring by throwing a two-run pitch into the second deck in the top of the second. He did the job again a few innings later, throwing a sacrifice fly to center during the count. The left-hander finished the day 1-3, but scored three times in the series and has now driven in nine runs in his last seven games.
– Francisco Lindor remained hot while on base three more times and hit two solo home runs to extend his hitting streak to seven games. The superstar shortstop now has three long balls and six RBI to go along with a scorching .360 average, .543 OBP and 1.263 OPS in that span.
– Pedro AlonsoHis unorthodox season continued as he squandered a big opportunity, grounding into a double play with two on and one out in the top of the first, but then he lined up a pair of singles in each of his next two at-bats. The big man has been great with the bases empty, but is hitting just .213 with a .701 OPS with runners in scoring position this season.
– José Butto had posted 9.2 consecutive scoreless innings before allowing a solo home run Bryan De La Cruz in the seventh, but he recovered well to get a strikeout and a lineout to end the frame. Pregame, Mets manager Carlos Mendoza continued to praise the work the young right-hander has done since being recalled from Triple-A Syracuse to join the Mets’ bullpen.
– Edwin Diaz doubled but didn’t break as he worked his way through a tough bottom of the ninth to earn his 12th save of the season. Miami managed to bring the winning streak to the plate twice with just one out, but the star came closest Josh Bell be based on the choice of a defender and Jake Burger to exit to end the game.
Game MVP(s): Jeff McNeil and Francisco Lindor
The center field duo was at the heart of New York’s offense, accounting for five of its six runs.
