[autotag]Mateusz Gamrot[/autotag] He considers himself the best lightweight fighter in the UFC.

Gamrot (24-2 MMA, 7-2 UFC) faces Dan Hooker (23-12 MMA, 13-8 UFC) at Saturday’s UFC 305 (pay-per-view, ESPN, ESPN+) on the main card at the RAC Arena in Perth, Australia.

Winner of seven of his last eight fights, Gamrot is closing in on title contention. He is convinced he would pose a major threat to the UFC lightweight champion [autotag]Islam Makhachev[/autotag] (25-1 MMA, 14-1 UFC) on the ground. Gamrot helped Dustin Poirier prepare for his title fight against Makhachev at UFC 302 in June, where “The Diamond” fell short via late submission.

“In my opinion, I am the best fighter in the lightweight category,” said Gamrot in an interview with “House of Fight.” “Of course, Islam is of a very high level and he always shows high level skill, but if I meet him in the cage, I don’t think he can take me down, but I will (take him down). to be a great confrontation.”

Makhachev’s next title defense is expected to be Arman Tsarukyan, who Gamrot defeated in a five-round battle in June 2022. Makhachev has mulled a move to welterweight for a second belt opportunity, but Gamrot hopes May he stay long enough at 155 pounds so he can fight it.

“I hope he doesn’t move up a category and stays at lightweight,” continued Gamrot. “Maybe not this year because we don’t have time, but next year we will meet and see who is the best fighter in the lightweight division.”
