Miguel Pereiraone of the most exciting fighters on the UFC roster, has been helpful in helping after severe flooding in Brazil.
Last week, intense rains in Rio Grande do Sul led to devastating floods, claiming the lives of more than 100 people and causing more than 160,000 people to seek shelter due to the damage. Many emergency services have been working tirelessly on rescue efforts, including Pereira in Brazil.
A few days after recording a dramatic finish in the first round At UFC 301 in Rio de Janeiro, the UFC middleweight changed his focus from fighting to saving lives.
In several videos posted to their social media accounts, Pereira and other members of their rescue groups navigated flood waters in boats and jet skis, helping residents and rescuing stranded animals as they worked in waters up to 10 feet deep.
“Another day of battle here”, wrote Pereira in Portuguese on Instagram Wednesday. “Today, more than 15 animals were saved from this immensity of water. The scenes I’m seeing are heartbreaking for even the most difficult people like me, but I follow my purpose of helping those who need it most. We are one people. We are Brazilians.”
In another post on Wednesday, Pereira expressed sadness over the devastating situation in her home country, but found relief in the successful rescue of more animals that were trapped in homes.
“We have been in this seemingly endless fight for several days now,” wrote Pereira in another Instagram post. “The water stinks. The water hurts because it’s cold The water makes everything difficult But today alone, 26 dogs and 3 guinea pigs were rescued. We are here to help you. Let’s get this out of here. Keep donating, keep supporting.”
Rio Grande do Sul is around 1,500 kilometers from the site of Pereira’s most recent fight, in Rio de Janeiro. The state capital, Porto Alegre, where 1.3 million people live, and Canoas, a municipality in Greater Porto Alegre, suffered the deepest floods. Residents currently have no electricity and face shortages of drinking water and other necessities.
Unfortunately, more rain is forecast in the coming days, which will likely result in more flooding and delayed emergency assistance.
Pereira is asking for donations to support ongoing rescue efforts. As an incentive, he will donate the jacket and gloves used in the UFC 301 fight.
