Nowadays, the world of MMA awaits the announcement of a date for Jon Jones‘ turn back.
It’s become a common theme surrounding Jones in recent years. While his resume cannot be denied, he has only made eight walks to the cage in the last 10 years. After an injury ruled him out of his first heavyweight title defense last November, Jones is closing in on his return.
When Jones (27-1 MMA, 21-1 UFC) returns, it will be against former heavyweight champion Stipe Miocic, who has not fought since losing the title to Francis Ngannou more than three years ago. Instead of fighting while Jones recovered, Miocic opted to wait for the shot to regain the belt.
In his early days as a light heavyweight challenger, then champion, Jones was much more active. The year he won the title, he fought four times, including a defense against former 205-pound champion Lyoto Machida.
In that fight, which was his second defense, Jones landed a big takedown and landed brutal elbows that left Machida cut. Back on the feet, Machida was taken down with a counterattack before Jones quickly grabbed his neck for a standing guillotine choke. A few seconds later, Machida was face down on the screen. It was the first time Machida was submitted in his career.
