JOLIE Poirier has supported her husband Dustin Poirier throughout his boxing career.
Poirier will face Islam Makhachev for the UFC lightweight title at UFC 302 at the Prudential Center in Newark, New Jersey on Saturday, June 1, 2024.
Poirier is a household name among casual combat sports fans after back-to-back wins over The Notorious and is earning checks from his MMA career.
Diamante’s path to stardom, however, was far from simple – with many ups and downs and devastating setbacks.
But he always had the unwavering support of his childhood friend Jolie.
The couple started dating 20 years ago, when they were teenagers.
They got married in September 2009.
Jolie was front and center the night her then-fiance made his debut in his professional boxing career.
And her support is something Poirier still credits for his success today.
He said: “What’s beautiful, my wife has been there since the first fight when I was 18.”
Jolie had no problem supporting her high school dropout boyfriend’s career choice, which seemed like a pipe dream to many.
She said of his foray into sport: “He was kind of struggling to find himself, I guess you could say.”
The Poiriers’ lives changed for the better in August 2016 when they welcomed their daughter Parker into the world.
Parker is the couple pride and joy and regularly characteristics on Jolie’s Instagram page, which has nearly 150,000 followers.
Jolie’s regular participation in her husband’s fights over the years caused her to develop thick skin and become immune to the blood and guts of a cage fight.
So much so that she was distraught when McGregor claimed she had DMed him on Instagram in some outrageous pre-fight mind games ahead of his 2021 trilogy fight with Poirier.
Jolie accepted the accusation and what followed social media social media abuse on the chin.
But she ended up having the last laugh by pointing the finger in McGregor’s face seconds after he broke his leg in the Sin City showdown.
Poirier has not yet realized his dream of claiming indisputable UFC gold – falling short of retired Khabib Nurmagomedov and former champion Carlos Oliveira.
And despite her husband’s shortcomings, Jolie is confident that her dream will eventually come true.
She said: “I’ve been telling Dustin for years that he’s going to be world champion.
“I’ve been telling him for years that he’s the best in the world and it’s just a matter of time, if he gets that opportunity he’ll make it happen.
“So even when he was fighting, I was like, ‘I told you.
“It will happen.
“You will be the world champion.
“Here’s your opportunity.
“Just go out there and make it happen.”
