David Martinezone of the best talents in Mexico today, is one step closer to realizing his biggest dream.
The 25-year-old bantamweight has parted ways with his longtime promotion, Combate Global, where he was a dominant champion, and is looking for a new home, specifically a spot on the UFC roster. Martinez (10-1) terminated his contract with the promotion last weekend, and his team has already started looking for an opportunity in the Octagon.
“My people are looking into this possibility and wanting to see if they can get me a contract with the UFC – which is where I want to go,” Martinez told MMA Junkie in Spanish. “But so far nothing has been signed.”
Martinez is on a six-fight winning streak, with five of them coming by stoppage. That run includes a TKO victory over former UFC fighter Francisco Rivera.
“The Black Spartan” knows that today there are many options in MMA and that his services can be highly sought after. Still, although he’s not completely closed off to other options, he wants to fight for the UFC above all else.
“We know that today there are many options, but the truth is that my dream is to be in the UFC, so that is what we are looking for,” said Martinez.
Martinez feels a little nervous heading into free agency, but he’s also excited about what could happen in his future. If the UFC comes calling, he says he’s more than ready to compete in the Octagon and join his older sister, Melissa Martinez, on the UFC roster.
“I feel ready, prepared and I’m physically healthy,” Martinez said. “I have no injuries and the truth is that I have been training very hard and I feel mentally and physically in very good shape. I can definitely fight there (in the UFC).
