But he was forced to pull out of his long-awaited showdown with fan favorite Michael Chandler due to injury.

News of the injury raised fears the Irish would be set for another long period on the sidelines.

But according to veteran MMA reporter Ariel Helwani, these concerns are misplaced.

He said in his Youtube channel: “Conor’s injury is not serious, not serious.

“I think he could come back in two months. I’m not going to say what it is because I was asked not to say it.

“And you have to respect that.

“It sucks, man. I think we were all looking forward to a fight with Conor McGregor – it’s been a long time.”

According to Helwani, the UFC expects its poster boy to fight in late August or mid-September.

He wrote on X: “There is still no new date for McGregor x Chandler.

“They’re hoping for August or September.”

Conor McGregor surprises fans with latest Instagram post as they are left wondering ‘are you fighting or not?’

August 31 is the only free date on the promotion’s calendar to tie in with McGregor’s return before the close of summer.

The MMA leader already has a pay-per-view event – UFC 306 – scheduled to take place in Las Vegas, on September 14th.

The card – which will take place at The Sphere – currently does not have a headline.

So it would make perfect sense for McGregor to reach the top the bill in the new arena, which he is already thinking about headlining.

He told The MacLife: “I’ll do three this year: June, September, December.

“We have Chandler in June, obviously. September, Sphere, is Mexican Independence Day.

“Potentially someone with Mexican heritage, maybe a [Nate] Diaz.

“I think Diaz would be perfect. I don’t know the details.

“I kind of thought it would be adorable.”

McGregor, 35, hasn’t set foot in the Octagon since breaking his left leg in his trilogy fight with Dustin Poirier almost three years ago.
