Tyson Fury says Oleksandr Usyk’s fight was at times too easy, as if he was ‘up there with a local amateur boxer’

Tyson’s Fury There’s an interesting reason why he lost to Oleksandr Usyk.

Fury (34-1-1, 24 KOs) was knocked down late by Usyk (22-0, 14 KOs) en route to a split decision loss in their heavyweight boxing bout in May at the Kingdom Arena in Riyadh. Usyk became the first undisputed heavyweight champion since Lennox Lewis in 1999.

Fury thought he had done enough to win the fight. “The Gypsy King” felt he was comfortably outpointing Usyk before being defeated in round 9, and even called Usyk an easy opponent.

“It was actually a lot easier than I thought it would be, the fight with Usyk – a lot easier,” Fury said in his FUROCIDADE Podcast. “People saying, ‘Oh, he’s a hard man to beat.’ I was attacking him with three-, four-punch combinations, laughing at him. My problem with that fight is that I probably had too much fun. It was probably too easy. Sometimes it was very easy.

“It was like I was there with a local amateur boxer and I was really enjoying it, joking around. (I) paid the ultimate price in round 9, where I got a round of 10-8 and was eliminated. This is what happens when you have too much fun. They always tell me, ‘Never mix your work with play,’ and I always gave them the middle finger, and now it’s come back to me.”

Fury will have the opportunity to leave no doubt when he settles things with Usyk on December 21 in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia.

“I have to get him out of there because I’m not going to make a decision, which is unfortunate because it’s hard enough to win a fight just for the sake of winning it, let alone knowing that you have to knock someone out,” Fury said. “But I’m confident and looking forward to the challenge.”
