UFC CEO Dana White is not happy with Kelvin Gastelum.
Gastelum (19-9 MMA, 13-9 UFC) appeared heavy for UFC on ABC 6 fight week in Saudi Arabia, so much so that his welterweight fight against Daniel Rodriguez moved up 15 pounds to middleweight.
Rodriguez (17-5 MMA, 7-4 UFC) expressed his displeasure with the circumstances in a pre-fight press conference and White expressed the same sentiments after Gastelum won a unanimous decision on Saturday.
“I’m not excited about Kelvin Gastelum right now,” White told reporters at a post-fight press conference. “This guy lost weight three times in his career. You have kids fighting a week in advance, skipping cards, coming here and gaining weight, and Kelvin doesn’t gain weight. It is extremely disappointing.”
Gastelum apologized for the botched weight cut during his in-cage interview, but as he himself noted, this isn’t the first time he’s run into trouble and apologized.
He officially missed weight three times on the scale during his 11 years in the UFC and fluctuated between middleweight and welterweight. Gastelum successfully gained weight in December, weighing in at 170 pounds. It is unclear what weight class he will compete in next.
