[autotag]Marlon Vera[/autotag] I can’t help but wonder if he made the wrong decision fighting Deiveson Figueiredo in UFC on ABC 7.
Many in the MMA community were surprised when Vera (21-10-1 MMA, 15-9 UFC) turned things around less than five months after his unanimous decision loss to Sean O’Malley in their bantamweight title fight at UFC 299. in March. . “Chito” suffered a lot of damage in the fight, but insisted before stepping into the octagon with Figueiredo, on Saturday, at the Etihad Arena, on Yas Island, in Abu Dhabi, that he was fully recovered.
Only he knows what is true, but the reality is that Vera was knocked out for the first time in his 24-fight UFC career in the third round against Figueiredo, raising speculation about whether his durability has changed. It appears that Vera is thinking about all of these same questions and said after the unanimous decision loss that she now intends to take a longer layoff.
Vera released a statement on social media addressing the loss and what comes next (via Instagram):
I failed myself last night. I thought I was ready, I felt good in the gym, but in the end I might come back too quickly after a tough title fight. Life doesn’t end here, I still dream of big things, I just need time to let go and reset. Thank you Abu Dhabi for your affection to my family for always being by my side and Ecuador, thank you for always lifting me up as he did in the past. Shukrahn Abu Dhabi I will return reborn
With the loss, Vera is now on her first two-fight losing skid since 2018. The last time she was in this position, she returned to the track with a five-on-five win streak, all by stoppage.
At 31, Vera will try to bounce back with a similar run after the break to “reset”.
