Utah Jazz x Golden State Warriors

It is highly unlikely that Chris Paul will return to the Warriors next season. It’s not that Steve Kerr or anyone else is unhappy with his play — these were Golden State’s best non-Curry minutes in years, and a lot of that was thanks to Paul. It’s just a financial situation where the Warriors are trying to reduce their high taxes, and another team will likely offer CP3 more money than the Warriors want to pay their backup point guard.

Could the Spurs be the team that breaks through? It’s no secret that San Antonio is looking for a point guard/ball leader to pair with Victor Wembanyama next season, and Marc Stein said in his latest newsletter sources told him that CP3 could be compatible.

“One potential team to watch if Paul and the Warriors split is San Antonio. Among the first personnel issues in circulation: The Spurs could emerge as suitors for Paul if they decide to pursue some veteran expertise on short notice. contract basis to provide presumptive Rookie of the Year winner Victor Wembanyama with more experienced help in Year 2.”

What the Spurs are hoping for is a longer-term fit to join Wembanyama, or at least a medium-term fit from someone who would be around for a few years and help this team grow and start competing in the postseason in the next years. That’s not Paul. However, if the Spurs can’t find that guy now, or if they get someone so young that they want another veteran in the mix, the idea of Chris Paul as that veteran voice is an interesting one. If the strong-willed Paul and coach Gregg Popovich could come together, it could benefit everyone.

It may not be either side’s first choice, but it could work.

One other note. Spurs fans are buzzing about the team getting into the mix for a Trae Young trade this summer, as he is the most highly-touted point guard likely to be available. League sources told NBC Sports not to bet on that happening, as San Antonio does not view Young as an option for Wembanyama going forward. The Spurs may be more interested in the Hawks’ Dejounte Murray if he is available.
