Kerr acknowledges the truth about his Warriors future and training schedule originally appeared in NBC Sports Bay Area
Steve Kerr is considered one of the NBA’s greatest coaches, leading the Warriors to four NBA championships during his 10 years in Golden State.
All good things must come to an end, and Kerr recently spoke with NBC Bay Area’s Raj Mathai to further detail when his final chapter as head coach of the Warriors will be.
“I think definitely in every job in sports, it’s almost a lifetime,” Kerr said. “And for a coach, I think I’ll feel that when I arrive and I didn’t feel that last year in terms of time to leave. I feel like we have a few years here with Steph [Curry]Draymond [Green] and I hope Klay [Thompson]. We’re still going.
“We’re still bringing in a whole group of young players who are doing really well. I’m loving my job every day. I love coming into this building every day. What’s not to love about the Bay? So I can’t wait for next season with the Warriors.”
The Warriors hired Kerr as head coach in 2014 to succeed former head coach Mark Jackson.
In his first season, he helped lead his team to the NBA Finals for the first time in 40 years – where the core won the first of four titles.
Golden State has made five consecutive Finals appearances, undeniably ruling the league for so long, and even when doubted and called “old” three years later, the Warriors have won yet another championship in 2022.
While Kerr believes his core Curry, Green and Thompson – who have spent the last decade together – are still capable of fighting for a fifth ring, he understands the time will come to walk away from it all.
“But there will come a time and maybe two years from now when my contract will end,” Kerr said. “Maybe it’s time to move on and for the Warriors to look for new blood and new ideas. We will both know when that time comes.
“I can tell you one thing: It will be a very amicable split, whenever that happens.”
