The Warriors have a lot on their plate this NBA off-season, capitalized on by franchise icon Klay Thompson’s impending free agency.

But with the Oct. 23 deadline to sign members of the 2020 NBA Draft class to rookie-scale contract extensions approaching, could Golden State lock down Jonathan Kuminga and Moses Moody in the near future? Warriors general manager Mike Dunleavy would like to have the duo in the Bay long-term, he recently said Tim Kawakami of The Athleticbut it’s all a matter of time.

“I think we want these guys here long term,” Dunleavy told Kawakami. “So having them eligible for extension certainly helps with trying to make something work. I think going through everything we’re going through right now with the draft and free agency, we’ll get to that. But that doesn’t mean these guys aren’t priorities. There’s just a few other things going on right now.”

With the 2024 NBA Draft coming and going and Warriors trade target Paul George reportedly opting to become a free agent on Saturday, things are now a little clearer for Golden State — and, perhaps, darker in some ways. Thompson allegedly is going out Bay Area, and the Warriors desperately need to make some noise if they need to replace him.

Could Kuminga or Moody be at the table in a negotiation? Dunleavy formerly didn’t rule it out.

“It would have to be something that we think would unequivocally change the trajectory of our franchise,” Dunleavy told reporters during his pre-draft interview, when asked about any member of the Warriors’ young core — Kuminga, Moody, Trayce Jackson-Davis. and Brandin Podziemski – could be traded.

Kuminga I liked a featured campaign during the 2023-24 NBA season, solidifying himself as a key piece in head coach Steve Kerr’s rotation, while Moody has certainly shown enough to gain an opportunity for a bigger role. And with the Warriors’ top trade target, George, now off the market, there doesn’t appear to be any franchise-altering talent left that could justify such a package.

But there’s still plenty of off-season left, Dunleavy and Co. certainly want to get an idea of ​​what his cap situation is like before granting any contract extensions. And as Warriors fans know all too well, no trade is completely off the table.
