Why Draymond claims the Oakland Warriors drafting him was ‘fate’ originally appeared in NBC Sports Bay Area
After carving out a legendary career as a member of the Warriors, Draymond Green believes he was destined to come to the Bay Area.
Speaking with Marshawn Lynch, Gavin Newsom and Doug Hendrickson on Podcast “Politics”, Green said he never imagined being drafted by a California team, but explained how quickly things changed for him.
“If you had asked me when I was going through the recruiting process, like I was a kid from Saginaw, Michigan, I went to Michigan State, the first 22 years of my life I never left Michigan State,” Green said. . . “If you had asked me where I would be drafted, the last place I would have told you was anywhere in the state of California. The state of California to me seemed so far from home, so out of reach.”
Green went on to explain how the Warriors’ draft ended up being a pivotal moment in his life, both personally and professionally.
“Now, not only do I get drafted to California State, as you get to talk about destiny and how your life unfolds, but I also get drafted to the Golden State Warriors in Oakland, California,” Green explained. “I arrive in Oakland; I feel like I’m [back in] Saginaw. I get there and I’m like, ‘Man, I feel like I’m home, I’m comfortable,’ like I can be myself. Oakland got me, you know what I’m saying?
“When I see how everything happened, for me to be called up to that place, I couldn’t have asked for a better situation. It set me up for success.”
Golden State selected Green with the 35th overall pick in the 2012 NBA Draft, joining him with Klay Thompsonne Steph Curry. The trio formed the core of four NBA championship teams, as the franchise transformed from perennial losers into one of the iconic dynasties in professional sports history.
Although Thompson and the Warriors recently parted ways, Green and Curry remain in Golden State as the franchise looks at a future based on emerging stars Jonathan Kuminga and Brandin Podziemski.
