Lacob addresses Steph’s comments about Warriors’ uncertain future originally appeared in NBC Sports Bay Area
Steph Curry wants to remain a warrior for the rest of her life.
The only exception to that, he said, would be if Golden State eventually sank of the Western Conference and became a tank team.
“It’s hard, right? I’ve always said I want to be a warrior for the rest of my life,” Curry told Andscape’s Marc J. Spears in a recent interview. “At this stage in my career, I feel like this is possible. And you can still be competitive, it doesn’t mean you’ve secured the championship. realist.
“…Let’s put it this way, it’s a long-winded way of saying that if it’s a situation where you’re a bottom feeder and it’s just because you want to stay there, I would have a hard time with that. But I don’t think that’s going to be the reality .”
Warriors owner Joe Lacob would also like Curry to remain with the only NBA organization he has ever known. But after the emotional and Franchise-altering departure of Klay Thompsoneyes have been opened and anything can happen.
But Lacob didn’t take Curry’s words to Spears seriously and certainly wasn’t surprised by them.
“From what I heard, everything he said was what you would expect, which is, ‘I want to win.’ And if we were a really bad team, I think he would rethink whether he really wanted to end his career here,” Lacob said in “The Audacy TK Program.” “But that’s not the case and he didn’t expect that to be the case.
“And certainly from the many conversations I’ve had with Steph, and I’m very close with Steph, we talk a lot and we have a great relationship – I think he’s very comfortable with where the franchise is headed and how hard we do it. try to put the best possible product on the court.”
After winning their fourth title as a unit three seasons ago, the Warriors were eliminated from the second round of the NBA playoffs the following year and failed to make the playoffs last season.
Curry certainly shows no signs of slowing down anytime soon, but the clock is still ticking on the 36-year-old’s future – driving that narrative to Lacob, general manager Mike Dunleavy and the Warriors organization to not “waste” Curry’s final remaining years.
“I have to be honest — I don’t really think of it that way,” Lacob said. “It’s as important to me as it is to our fans or to Steph. I don’t ever want to stop trying or be bad. We’re trying to win. I think people – I hope – understand that we, as a group that bought this team 15 years ago, tried be competitive as much as we can. It’s very difficult these days. I think we can all agree on the fact that we have been competitive most of the time.
“Our first few years, of course, took a while to get better and then we had a great run and then we had those two horrible injuries. It won in 2022. And I think the last two years we’ve been competitive, but it was a really incredible year where the West was so good that we thought we would win 50 games or more if Draymond. [Green] it wasn’t suspended, we thought we would have done that.
“So we’re trying to be the best we can and the same thing this summer. We have made great improvements to the team and we will continue to do so at all times.”
