Reporter awkwardly gives Aiyuk updates with 49ers receiver’s agent nearby originally appeared in NBC Sports Bay Area
NFL Media’s Mike Garafolo couldn’t contain his laughter as he anticipated NFL Network’s “Inside Training Camp Live” host Tom Pelissero throwing him an update on where the 49ers stand. wide receiver Brandon Aiyuk.
As Garafolo prepared to provide his report from Las Vegas Raiders training camp on Wednesday, Aiyuk’s agent, Ryan Williams, was within earshot of the veteran reporter, creating an awkward situation.
Garafolo made the most of the moment.
“Alright, guys, it doesn’t get much weirder than that,” Garafolo said. “I’m about to give you an update on Brandon Aiyuk, and if we dig a little deeper here… Hi Ryan.
“Brandon Aiyuk’s agent, Ryan Williams, is present here at Raiders practice. Why doesn’t he have a microphone in his hand? Why is he declining comment. I asked him to join us, come update us, give us the best information he could give and said ‘No, I’m not commenting.’ He told me, I think, he told me ‘Nothing is done.’ He also said ‘Stop paying attention to everything you read in X and think it is. [real].”
Garafolo provided the latest information on Aiyuk’s status while Williams listened.
“There is no agreement for Brandon Aiyuk to go anywhere while we sit here,” Garafolo said. “I said it can’t get much weirder than that. There is no deal. The 49ers have had these trade negotiations with several teams, including the Pittsburgh Steelers, as I understand it. But there is no trade deal in place. There is no finalized contract We will continue to monitor the situation, all of us, to see what happens from here.
Aiyuk’s contract retention took several twists and turns this week, with a source telling NBC Sports Bay Area’s Matt Maiocco on Monday that San Francisco had agreed to the business structure with the Cleveland Browns and New England Patriots.
Maiocco also reported that Aiyuk has been given permission to discuss contract terms with the Browns, Patriots, Washington Commanders and Pittsburgh Steelers.
But the Commanders withdrew from discussions and the Steelers initially did not match the 49ers in a trade package.
But in the following days, the 49ers and Steelers re-engage trade talks towards Aiyuk, while the Patriots withdrawn from consideration to purchase the 26 year old receiver.
As of Thursday, there had been no reports that the 49ers and Steelers had agreed to a trade package or that Aiyuk and the Browns had agreed to contract terms.
So for now, Aiyuk remains a member of the 49ers.
