Giants POUND Dyontae Johnson is being considered weekly due to a high ankle sprain he suffered during Thursday’s preseason opener against the Detroit Lions, according to ESPN’s Jordan Raanan.
Johnson had been generating a lot of positive buzz with his standout performance during training camp and the first few quarters on Thursday before leaving with an injury.
The undrafted free agent from Toledo was good in the run game, as he generated two tackles for a loss, as well as two pressures and one of New York’s two sacks on the night.
“I’m very pleased with it,” DC Shane Bowen said this week. “I think he’s fighting for a role and I tell these guys special teams plays a vital role in that, but defensively he did a great job of stepping in and being productive for us.”
Johnson spent last season on New York’s practice squad, but appeared to have had a legitimate shot at making the roster as a backup to the starting linebacker. Bobby Okereke.
This injury appears to derail those plans, but opens up an opportunity for the rookie linebacker Dario Massauwho also had a strong game on Thursday.
