NASHVILLE, Tenn. – Cornerback Ambry Thomas has been ruled out 49ers preseason opener against the Tennessee Titans on Saturday at Nissan Stadium due to a right forearm injury.

After Loss to San Francisco 17-13coach Kyle Shanahan revealed to reporters that Thomas suffered a broken forearm and will be out for “some time.”

The fourth-year defensive back missed a tackle on a screen pass thrown by Titans quarterback Mason Rudolph and immediately collapsed on the field. Thomas walked to the sideline, trying not to move his right arm, letting it hang over his shoulder.

Thomas was taken to the blue injury tent for evaluation, then was soon seen on a cart being taken to the locker room for x-rays. The team later announced that the Michigan product had been ruled out, foreshadowing that Thomas could be sidelined for some time.

He was some difficult seasons for Thomas, who played 42 games – 11 starts – in his three seasons with San Francisco. The third-round draft pick was on the field for just 481 defensive snaps, or 49 percent, in 2023, after even less in 2022 when Thomas played just 41 snaps throughout the season.

In Thomas’ three campaigns with the 49ers, he recorded 79 total tackles, 61 solo and one loss. The 24-year-old also recorded two interceptions, 12 pass breakups, one forced fumble and one fumble recovery.

The 49ers have added depth to their defensive backfield since signing Thomas, which, along with the lack of snaps, indicates that the cornerback’s time with the team may be coming to an end upon the completion of his 2024 rookie contract.
