Cutting a first-round draft pick after having played just 10 career games would be a huge admission of a draft mistake, but that’s what the Vikings could do with safety Lewis Cine.
Cine, a 2022 first-round draft pick, was working on the third string during offseason workouts and has a difficult path to earning a spot in the squadaccording to ESPN.
It just didn’t work out for Cine in Minnesota. He was barely playing at the start of his rookie year before suffering a compound leg fracture in week four that caused him to miss the rest of the season. In his second season he played in just seven games, almost exclusively on special teams.
If Cine makes the team, it could be largely because his $1.75 million salary is guaranteed, and cutting him doesn’t save salary cap space for the Vikings. However, if the Vikings are drafting their best players, it doesn’t appear Cine will be one of the 53.
