Yahoo Sports’ Jason Fitz and Frank Schwab discuss whether Kyler Murray is truly “that guy” to make the Cardinals competitive in the NFC.

Video transcript

The Arizona Cardinals.

I think there’s a big question for a big thing, a big curiosity for me.

And that is, is Kyler really him?

I mean, Kyler Murray could be, he could be the man, the myth, the legend.

But if I look at his stats throughout this year, keep in mind he’s had a winning season so far.

A year in which things went very well.

He’s only been in the last two years.

He didn’t go through a full season, as we all know, there was the highest completion percentage for him, it was a year where he got 69%, like he had a great year and some, okay, there might be something years.

I don’t think we need to forget that Arizona was close to getting almost any quarterback they wanted and they chose to stick with Kyler Murray and give him what we consider to be one of the best prospects we’ve ever seen emerge as a wide receiver.

That means there is an immediate expectation in my mind that Kyler Murray will turn around and get it right.

And this is that time where we don’t always get defensive coaches, we don’t always get the same benefit of the doubt: making it really smart to keep that quarterback there.

I don’t know.

I guess we don’t know now who Kyler Murray is?

Yes, Kyler is one of those guys in the NFL where I never know what to think of him.

I’ve liked him since the beginning, so he got paid and I like him, he’s really not worth that money, but even that contract he got from the Cardinals doesn’t look that bad compared to how the quarterback market has exploded.

So it’s not a big deal for the Cardinals, but he kind of makes these flashy plays.

Sometimes he plays really well as a defender and then there are moments where you’re like, uh, he’s just not that good.

So, I don’t know yet, but I’ll say this and, hey, fantasy football out there, Kyler Murray is going to put up numbers this year, period.

The Cardinals have a terrible defense.

They’re going to be in a lot of bad game scripts and Kyler Murray is going to pitch this like he came back last year and played eight games.

The first five games are ok.

They’re solid, for sure.

In the last three games he has really taken off, he has played very well in the last three games.

And now you add junior Marvin Harrison to that mix.

The Cardinals have a lot to like on offense, not just junior Marvin Harrison, who I think will be excellent from day one, I’ve talked a lot about him.

Gold jacket talent is what I say about him.

Many people do this.

He is incredible.

Michael Wilson is a great second-year receiver. Trey Mcbride got a chance at tight end there.

Even Greg Dorsch is a good slot receiver.

They have two good running backs.

This attack will yield a lot of points.

Kyler Murray played basically at his career level last year and that’s saying something because he came back late from A L surgery.

It’s kind of new and cozy and all that kind of stuff.

He played so well in the second half of last season, basically within his career standards, that I think he could take the next step.

It feels like he’s been around forever, but he’s only 27 years old.

There’s still another level to unlock for Kyler and I really like him this season.

I think he will, I don’t think the Cardinals will be good, but I think Kyler will be very good this year.

Well, if Kyler is good and this offense is explosive, then the Cardinals will start to get the benefit of the doubt.

And that’s where I trust the head coach to figure out the defensive side of the ball.

It will only take a minute to get theirs.
