Shanahan Literally Confesses to Off-Season Viral Mustache originally appeared in NBC Sports Bay Area
Kyle Shanahan caused a stir this offseason for all the right… or wrong reasons.
We’ll leave that up to you to decide.
A photo of the 49ers coach as a star running back Christian McCaffrey’s Wedding on June 29 in Rhode Island went viral because of new look the 44-year-old wore.
When speaking to reporters on Tuesday before the 49ers’ first training camp practice in Santa Clara, Shanahan talked about his offseason mustache and his inspiration for the decision.
“I always try it out of season because of boredom,” Shanahan said. “I got really used to it and I liked it, because my wife liked it. But I knew you guys would talk about it a lot, so I had to shave yesterday.”
Some of us, without naming names, would like to be able to grow something at least halfway to Shanahan’s stunning lip foliage.
So good for him.
Unfortunately for Shanahan, he underestimated how important this would be among the bored and chronically online Faithful 49ers. Big mistake.
“You never know, I thought it would be more low-key, not like a lot of people see it,” Shanahan added. “But that was really stupid of me. You do it for the first week because I’ve never had a mustache before, but after wearing it for a week you get used to it and it’s not a big deal until you see someone who has ‘Not Yet saw you and then they look at you very strangely. I’ve learned that this requires respect, whether it’s good or bad respect. [or] Without respect. It still makes someone decide. But no, I can’t carry it into the season.”
Anyway, back to real football.
